Activity

Lucky Sentences

Students roll dice to make sentences.

This is something I made for Unit 1 Part 2 of Here We Go 3, but it should work for pretty much anything you want.

That unit focuses on "Let me show you..." and "... helped me ...". This is an activity I used for the latter.

I start by explaining the activity well, and show examples on the board, so the students really understand how to do it.

Then, students write 6 Names, Verbs, and Things. If they can't think of a verb, I have included a verb list at the bottom. Still, it's a good idea to write down 6 of each on the board for those students that have trouble coming up with what to write, but can copy.

I give 5 minutes for them to write all their words (or copy). Using character names, friend names, or people they know will make it more enjoyable for the kids.

Next, I make groups of 3 (you could do more or less, depending on how many dice you have). Give each group one dice.

Each student rolls three times and says the sentence as they roll.

For example:
- Student rolls a 1. They say the Name written in slot 1 like "Sousuke helped me "
- Student rolls again and gets a 6. They say the verb in slot 6. "clean"
- Student rolls again and gets a 3. They say the thing in slot 3. "soccer."

Now, the student passes the dice to the next person and then writes that down in Part B, while the next person rolls.

When they have all written their sentences, give them time to share with the class what they got. The students will laugh so much with all the crazy sentences they made!

Variation: You can have each student roll, but have everyone in the group write down what they have in those spots, since what they have is different. That way, they each will be able to roll the dice once and still create some funny sentences.

(This idea just came to me one day, but I've used ALTopedia a lot. So, it's possible that it was originally someone else's idea that I unconsciously used for my own activity. So, let me know and I will give credit where due.)

Looks good, I'm going to try it next week. Any chance you can upload a word file? Id like to make a few edits.
