"What are the rules here?" group game

students work in small groups to write sentences using "have to", "don't have to", "must", and "must not" to describe rules for various locations

This activity is a group game best suited for groups of 4 (but as long as you have less than 9 groups it's okay). I made it for my JHS 2nd graders.

First, using the picture pages, drill the location names with the students to ensure they all understand and can say them in English.

Next, choose one picture to be your example. Give students 5 example sentences using "have to", "don't have to", "must", and "must not" to describe rules at that place.

Then, divide students into groups and hand out the remaining pictures. Tell them not to say their location aloud. Give the groups some time to write sentences about the rules of their given location.

After all groups write at least 3 sentences, have them present one by one. While one group presents, the other groups have a chance to guess which location they are describing after each sentence. If you want to make it more challenging, tell groups that they only get one guess per round.

When all groups are finished, have them decide which rule they think is most important for their location. Go through the groups again and have short discussions about the rules at each place.

This guessing game was a lot of fun every time I've used it, so I hope it's useful!
