Can I help you? - New Crown 2: Talk 5

This is an extension activity for New Crown Talk 5. The lesson reviews the textbook material and then students practice real life "problem scenarios" together using cards and partners!

This activity is both a lesson covering the Talk 5 Lesson of New Crown 2, and a conversation activity based on the textbook. The first part of the lesson covers a warm-up, new vocabulary, the dialogue in the textbook, and some explanation of the phrases. Then the activity begins, first with an example from the ALT and JTE demonstrating the conversation.

  1. Each student has a worksheet, a problem card, and a partner.

  2. Students follow the dialogue on the worksheets and work to "solve" each other's problems:
A: "Can I help you? / What's the matter? / Do you need some help?"
B: "Yes I have a problem! (students read the problem on their card.).
A: "Oh no. / I'm sorry." (student gives a suggestion to solve their partner's problem using the idea box.)
B: "Thanks, I appreciate it. / Thank you for your help."

  3. Students should switch partners after each partner gets a chance to be both "A" and "B". I do this by every other row of students moving forwards one seat (The front student should move to the back and vice-versa). Repeat this step at least 3 times if you can!

  4. When students return to their seat (you can repeat step 3 with however many partners you like/have time for), they should write a skit with their original partner.

  5. Students should perform their skit for the class! You can take volunteers and then call students using a random number generator.
