ABAB 🦐🦐 (Word Guessing Warm Up Game)

This is a quick pair game where the students have to give hints to their partner without saying the word (it's pretty much tabboo but with a fun theme 🦐🦐)

WHAT'S NEW
- Added round slides (Good morning and good night)
- Made the ABAB classroom animation faster to save time explaining
- Changed the hint examples to make it more appropriate for JHS students (feel free to change it to whatever you like)
- Added a hat for the shrimp when he goes to sleep cos he's had a long day at work

  • No seat or desk arrangement needed
  • No materials required
  • Once you know how to play, you don't need the PPT and can play it right off the bat

For detailed notes on how to play this game, it's all included in the notes section (PPTX file).

TLDR Ver:

  • There are two teams: Team A (エ) and Team B (ビ)
  • Tell the students to make pairs (the classmate right next to them)
  • Make all the students go to sleep
  • You write the word on the blackboard
  • Say: "Good morning Team A (B)", they wake up, look at the word and remember it
  • Erase the word and tell the other team to wake up.
  • Once everyone is "awake", tell all the students to stand up.
  • Set a time limit (about 60 secs) and walk around to assist students who are struggling to guess/give hints.
  • When their partner guessed the word correctly, they both sit down.
  • OPTIONAL: Ask the students, what kind of hints did they give to their partner (this can be skipped to save time and move on to the next round or if the class level is low/not so genki)
  • Move on to the next round, and have the other team give hints.

That's it! :)

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My HS students love this warm up, it always gets them the most engaged for English class. I usually just have them make pairs and have one person in each pair face the back while they guess, but this is a cute theme!

It took me way too long to figure out the prawn joke, haha. This is cute. I will be using it for sure.
