Translation Race Game

Review of 1st grade, junior high school grammar - A game where students translate sentences in groups and race to be the first team to translate all the sentences.

These sentences were taken from jiggswalsh's activity which I have linked. Thank you for making them!

Note:

  • There are places in the document where you will have to add your own place names. I have highlighted these.

To prepare:

  • First page: Print two copies of the first page. This is the answer key for you and the JTE.
  • Second page: Print as many copies as you have students.
  • Third page: Print one copy and cut out each sentence, making sure you cut them out with the number.
  • Blackboard: Draw a race track on the blackboard with 15 stops and a finish line.
  • Magnets: Create character magnets for each group or just use normal magnets, each a different colour.

Activity:

  1. Lay out the 15 cut up sentences at the front of the class.
  2. One student from each group comes up and gets one sentence.
  3. They then take it back to their group and have to translate the sentence into English.
  4. Each student in the group must write the sentence on their worksheet next to the correlating number.
  5. One student from the group must collect their groups worksheets and the sentence and bring them to the front of the classroom.
  6. The ALT and JTE will check every group members worksheet. If they are all correct, students leave the sentence and take another one.
  7. The student must also move their magnet along one stop of the race track.
  8. First team to translate all sentences correctly wins!
