MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • HowToOldMaid cards (Four copies of the printout will make one set).

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  • Before class, print out and cut out four copies for each set of cards. You'll need one set per group and make sure you take out the extra three old maid or baba cards so there is only one old maid per set. (In this case the old witch holding the apple is the baba.)
  • Give each set to a group of students. Around 5 students in a group seems to work fine.
  • When it is a student's turn, they must ask the student before them the question at the top of the card that they want to collect (e.g., Do you know where to find a dragonball?). If that student has the card they will reply in affirmative and hand it over. If they don't have that card, they will say, "No," the asker must pick a card from their hand without looking.
  • Whenever anyone has two of the same they can put them down(there should be two sets of two for each, except for the old maid card).
  • The student who is left with the Old Maid (witch holding the apple) card loses.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • It is often quickest to just tell the students to play it like babanuki.
