WHERE or WHEN Activities

Three activities to practice where or when with simple verbs

2022 Update: changed the first robot race to 'Do you often...?'

2021 Update: When, where and what are all introduced in the same unit near the beginning of the book so I've combined them into one lesson.

The first two activities are 'rock scissors paper' races to be done in pairs. The winner moves and asks the loser a question based on the information on the track. In the first race the questions will be along the line of 'What do you eat?' and in the second race 'What sport do you like?'. For each race I give the students about two or three minutes to play. The winner is the one that moved the furthest. After each race I give them a minute or so to write a couple of example questions and answers in the middle. These can be based on their partner's answers.

The next is the question guessing much like below. The students work in groups and after seeing the key words and the answer they must guess whether the question uses 'when' or 'where' along with the best verb to use. These is a race and speak activity. With a member of each group going to a teacher with the answer. For points I either do it based on speed (fastest groups getting more points) or I use random point cards (I use a deck of cards with the A, 2, 3, 4 and jokers as some sort of wild card). THe work sheet has space for writing in the questions and answers but I always inform the students this isn't necessary and only do it if they have time AFTER giving the teacher their question. The focus should be speed and speaking.

Between both is talk time. This is a pair activity that goes for a minute. Here the students have a small talk based on the language taught. This is something my classes are accustomed to doing. If yours aren't I'd recommend demonstrating or skipping it altogether. Small talk is very useful though since the games and activities we don't always get translated into practicing the language as an actual conversation.

Finally there is a writing activity for the groups or pairs or individual. I mostly run out of time before doing this. In fact I think if there is enough time or if they get a chance to follow this lesson up with an interview lesson they should just have a blank paper and completely come up with their own questions and answers.

The powerpoint game has then fill in the blanks to complete the questions. This is a group game with random point boxes. I usually just have one member of each group rush to bring the answer without writing. If the class is struggling a bit I'll use the worksheet.

Write and Race
This is another group activity. I ask a question, the groups work together to answer it and one member brings a teacher the answer. If its okay give them the next question. They bring it to their group and a new student returns to the teacher with the answer.

Interview the Teacher
The worksheet has the key answers. The group works together to think of questions that will make the teacher give those answer.
