DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  • Have the JTL review the target grammar, and possibly discuss the possible responses: Ok, Sure, no problem, I can/can't, etc.
  • Students break into groups of 4-5. Warn the students that using any type of writing utensil is prohibited and points will be deducted if violated.
  • Students play Janken to see which student goes first. The first student takes their group sheet and places it at the back of the classroom.
  • Read out round 1’s sentences. The student must retrieve their group’s sheet and write round 1’s sentences. The members within each group may help their teammates.
  • When they think they have written it correctly, they bring it to the teacher to check. If it is correct, they receive the highest bracket of points. For example, if there are five teams, the fastest team receives five points; the second team receives four points, etc.

Round 1:

  • May I ask you for a favour?
  • Could you open the door for me?

Round 2:

  • Could you do me a favour?
  • Could you wipe the board for me?
  • Could you help me please?

Round 3:

  • Could you be quiet?
  • May I sit here?
  • Could you speak up for me?
  • Could you come here?

Bonus Round:

  • May I call you tomorrow?
  • Could you play the computer with me?
  • Could you tell me your birthday?
  • May I play tennis with you?

VARIATIONS:

  • To increase the level of difficulty, reduce the number of students in a group.
  • While students are waiting for other groups to finish, have them formulate a series of questions on their own. Extra points are given for the most original questions at the end of the lesson.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • Low level-students will find it difficult to remember. These groups can take some memos. Additionally, they can use their textbook if needed.
