MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Secret Sentence handout
- 3 paper cards per round with one selected word or phrase of your choice from each box in the handout written on each card. (see Teaching Suggestions)
DETAILED EXPLANATION:
- Break students up into groups of 2 or divisions of 2 where students rotate roles each round. Each round needs the roles of a 'writer' and 'speaker'.
- Attach the secret sentence portions to the board. For the cards, choose one word or phrase from each box in the handout and write it on each card. For now, these are for the teacher only.
- Groups choose three words from the boxes in the handout and the 'writer' writes them on the handout.
- The 'speaker' then goes to the teacher or ALT with the group's sentence and says the sentence.
- The teacher or ALT will then tell the student how many sections are correct by saying, 0,1,2 or 3. The teacher will NOT tell the students which section is correct, only how many.
- The group records their score and tries again discussing which section is correct.
- The first group to get all three sections, and thus the secret sentence, correct is the winner.
VARIATIONS:
- Change the sentences to match the vocabulary needed.
- Add more choices per box to extend game time.
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
- Be sure the students cannot see through the cards on the board. If your class is prone to peaking, skip the cards on the board and keep the sentence on a secret card in your pocket or something similar in order to conceal the goal.
