2 Truths, 1 Lie Can, Can't Activity

Activity for students to practice using can and can't.

Thought it'd be good to share one of the types of activities I edit for multiple grammar points. Here's my most recent version. Lately my JTEs have been asking me to get rid of directions in Japanese so I instead added emojis. This activity can easily be adapted to other grammar points like the simple past or the present perfect.

(1) is for the ALT to make their own example to introduce the activity to the class. This is a fun way for the class to learn something interesting about you, so I say go crazy here. Have them fill in circle or x (maru/ batsu) and then tell them the answers.

(2) Then students think up and write 3 sentences of their own. I suggest having them do at least one of each target grammar so for this- one "can" sentence and one "can't" sentence. For my students, thinking of things about themselves takes awhile. I suggest to edit the provided Idea Box to your students' interests/things you think they can/can't do. Especially for first graders, I'd wait until the end of the unit to do this activity as review since they'll be more familiar with the grammar. You could also allow them plenty of time to write so they can use dictionaries or what's faster would be to limit them to using phrases from the idea box only.

(3) Students read their sentences aloud in groups of three or four and their groupmates guess which two are truths and which is the lie by filling in the circle, x tables. They can keep a tally of how many they got correct in the bottom box. If you'd like to review questions then have them ask to check the answers, such as, "Can you run fast?" "Yes, I can." (○) If the point of the activity is writing and reading aloud, I'd allow them to just do it as they please whether by saying Truth/ Lie/ True/ False/ Maru/ Batsu or whatever works best for them.

Pretty sure this activity has been shared before (ok, i just checked and indeed this has been shared before, by ....none other than myself....so) Anyway..... I thought I'd share my new one... Hope it helps!
