Animal News Stories

Students practice reading news articles and then share them with their classmates.

My JTE asked me to create a reading activity. Here’s how we went about it!

Divide students into groups of 4
Give each group 1 news article
Instruct students to read their news story together and figure out the meaning without using Google Translate (dictionaries are allowed)
Tell them to practice reading the story out loud together (if they need help with pronunciation they can ask you or the JTE for help)
Have 2 members of the group move to a different table with a different story and have them read their articles to each other in English

So for example…
Let's say there are 6 groups! Group 1 gets the monkey story. They read the story together, discuss the meaning, and figure out how to read it aloud. Once they have practiced reading it, two members of Group 1 move to Group 2 (dog story), and two members from Group 6 (crow story) replace the students who moved. The pair from Group 1 reads their news story to the pair from Group 2 and vice versa in English. After they are done reading in English, they can explain to the other group the meaning of the story in Japanese. Then once they are presented with their story, the same pair that moved moves again to the next table.
