Activity

Greetings Around the World, Card exchange

Students practice different world greetings while introducing themselves to their classmates!

Hello All,

This activity is aimed at Lets Try1, Unit1 so for elementary 3rd graders.

Print out the cards (9 cards per sheet) and make enough copies so that all of your students have 1 card to start. (ex. if you have 36 students you need to print 4 times)

There are two versions of the cards: 1. has the countries greetings and a picture of something that country is famous for, 2. Is just the greeting

The goal is to have students introduce themselves using the greeting on the card they have.

Ex. (Kenya card) S1: Jambo! I'm Emily.
(Japan card) S2: Konnichiwa! I'm Lucas.
See you!

Once they finish, they exchange cards, find a new partner, and introduce themselves using their new cards greeting. Very simple activity

I usually have the students do Janken to decide who goes first.

You and your HRT should join the students as well!

That's really all here is to it, U1 is pretty bland in terms of things you can do, I hope this inspires students to learn a few more greetings in different languages! Enjoy!

Thank you for this great activity! Did this with the 4th grade and they had a lot of fun with it :) Since our English class have a point system (for every 10 points they get a sticker), they each get 1 point if they greet someone with the same card as them. That really motivated them to greet as many friends as they could.
