"I want you to OOO XXX" card exchange activity

Students practice “I want you to ~~~~” in conversation using personalized choices.

Hello everyone! How is your day going? I hope you’re having a good year.
This is a flexible conversation activity to practice “I want you to _________.”, using a verb chosen by a card and a noun chosen by the student. Students should also provide a reason, such as “because I like/it’s/you can, etc.”.

Feel free to change the verbs on the cards!

Target Grammar:
- I want you to (verb) (noun), because (reason).

Materials:
- Cards (print and cut)

Basic Instructions (detailed lesson plan below):
Students practice conversations using “I want you to (verb) (noun), because ~~~”. The student’s nouns are chosen by the card they hold. Ex: The card is (LISTEN TO): “I want you to listen to YOASOBI, because I like the song IDOL.”. Students then exchange cards with their partner and find someone new to talk to.

Preparation:
- Change cards as needed
- Cut pages into individual cards

Lesson Plan (10 minutes):
1. Write “I want you to □ OOO, because OOO.” On the board. (Note: “because” can be removed if it’s too challenging for the students.).
2. Hand out cards to students, one card per student.
3. Show a demonstration with the HRT/JTE.
(Example conversation:
ALT card: WATCH, JTE card: STUDY.
ALT: “Hello!”
JTE: “Hello!”
ALT: “I want you to WATCH Haikyuu!!, because it’s a very exciting anime.
JTE: “I want you to STUDY Japanese, because you can’t speak Japanese well.”
ALT: “:(”
ALT and JTE switch cards and have a conversation with new people.
4. Check understanding with the class.
5. Practice target sentence pronunciation with the class.
6. Let the class walk around the room, have conversations and switch cards. (This part is flexible, can be 3-6 minutes, I think).
7. After the students are finished and sit down, choose a students and have a conversation with them (I want you to~~), or choose two students to have a conversation with each other. Can expand on the conversation like “Oh, do you like XX?/Can you XX well?”.
