Activity

Boardgame for “will” or “going to"

A simple but fun pattern practice activity for “will” or “going to”. Students look at the pictures in the game and make sentences.

Materials for each group:

Board game
Dice
Character cards or a tablet to use the Wheel of Names
Erasers or pen lids as markers (provided by students)
Optional: additional copy of dice sheet/instructions so that students can see them easily regardless of where they are sitting.

Students make groups (4-6). Scissors, Paper, Rock determines who will go first. Students use an eraser or pen lid to mark their place on the board game.
Step 1: Take a character card.
Step 2: Roll the dice and move the appropriate number of spaces on the board.
Step 3: Make a sentence using name + “is going to” + verb + noun + time period.
For example: Satoshi is going to eat pizza tomorrow.

Before starting demonstrate the game and review the vocabulary. The students should be familiar with the vocabulary used in this game, but it;s best to double check.

The character cards used for this game take a while to make. But, once made they can be used for a variety of different activities. And the students really enjoy the crazy English they can make with some of the characters.
The cards I make are double sided. The "question mark" page is for the backing, so that students can't see through them. I print the backing on different colored paper for each set (e.g. one set blue, another yellow) to help keep them easily organised.

However, if making the cards takes too long, students can use the ‘Wheel of Names” on their tablets. I recommend one tablet per group.

wow! seems so fun playing it. Could you please tell me what direction should be used to move and where is the finish point?

@monadotme I'm glad you like it. :) I usually play this game in a clockwise direction, but you don't have to. Either direction is fine (as long as everyone in the group is going the same way). There is no finish, students just play in a loop until time is up. I usually give a stamp or sticker to any students who pass the start more than once. Hope this helps.
