Gesture Game

Use gestures in the form of a competitive game to teach students target phrases. Student level - Elementary

Target phrases - How are you? - I am happy/sad/hungry/tired/sleepy

Process -

  1. Students stand up
  2. Everyone says twice - "How are you?"
  3. Everyone says - "I am _______"
  4. Right after saying "I am", everyone shows a random gesture of one of the emotions above. The students whose gestures match with that of the ALT is/are out of the game.
  5. Remove options to make it more competitive.

*Set images for the emotions or actions help the students more in retaining gesture memory which in turn catalyses the progress of the game.

NB - I saw this game played by one of my JTEs.

I did this today with my first graders New Horizons Let's Talk 2 p74 ("What's wrong?", "I have a headache.") and it went brilliantly! Thanks very much!

I did this with my third grader the other way around. I enjoyed it as much as they did.
