"That"

PPT with which vs that tips and lots of input practice with a class output at the end

I made this PPT for my 3rd graders when my JTE asked to teach "that." I threw in tips there for how to differeniate between which vs that without getting too lost in the details.

I have the class repeat the answers, and get your JTE to demo with you when it comes to the text message examples.
E.g 2nd example slide
JTE: I want to visit! Where do you live?
Me: Oh, I live in the house that has a red roof.
JTE: Okay thanks.
ask the class which house do I live in to confirm understanding

Repeat with the next following slides to build the their confidence. If there's nothing to confirm, just have them repeat the sentence.

This was made after the chorus concert so I included the piece their school sang.

Finally, at the end, I let it be a class discussion as we make our own sentence. Guide them by asking what the subject is, pointing to the KBBQ picture, and let them free-think. After I let them discuss, I get their suggestions as we make the sentence word by word together. (Most typical sentence formed was "The bbq that I ate in Korea was delicious" which I framed easily on purpose.)

The last one was a silly one I let them go wild with! For some reason, one sentence became "The gorilla that Mr. Hara (random teacher) saw at the zoo was beautiful." Feel free to make a copy and change it.

This works best with classes that love to talk out loud and engaged.
