Battle for Tokyo

A strategy game where teams try to control as much of Tokyo as possible! Used in tandem with quiz type questions.

About

Disclaimer: I take no credit for the concept or design of this game. The style/formatting is from NeonNeptune's Battle for Gunma while the overarching idea is from UonumaRobert and Englipedia.

The only thing I did was set up the map to Tokyo's 23 special wards. There are two versions: one for 3 teams and one for 4.

Set-Up

  • Before Class: Prepare your list of quiz questions (expect roughly 2-3 minutes per question). Either verbally or using another PowerPoint.
  • Optional Materials: timer, dice, whiteboards, marker pens, erasers (paper towels work well enough)
  • Arrange your students in 3 or 4 teams. Each team gets one whiteboard.

Game Rules

  • Teams all start with 1 territory.
  • Set the timer to 30 seconds (or however much time you wish to give them). When the timer beeps, all teams raise their whiteboards with their answer.
  • Teams with correct answers can expand their territory into neighboring prefectures.
  • If they wish to take another team's territory (including using items), spin the roulette wheel (or have them roll a die).
  • 1, 2, 3 no luck. 4, 5, 6 they take the other team's territory.
  • Team with the most territories at the end of the class period (or your list of questions) wins.

Game Items

  • To use an item, they have to doodle the item on their whiteboard while writing their answer.
  • If their answer is correct, the item effect triggers.
  • One item per round!
  • Each team gets 3 one-use items: bow, sword and shield.
  • Bow: take one territory from anywhere on the map
  • Sword: take two territories in one round.
  • Shield: protect your team territories from being taken (for one round)

Note: Exact game rules and set-up is up to you! Feel free to make this work for your own classes! For example, I stay on the kinder side and allow my students to keep their items if they get the wrong answers. But some of my JTEs think if they want to use it and they get it wrong, it's the kids' loss!

This is amazing!! I would want to use this with 6-7 team classes, but I guess in that case I can just assign two groups per color.

Or you can just do what I did and add two more colours on your own.
