Activity

This is our special nabe!

A parallel activity for 6th grade New Horizons Unit on Food. Students will think about their own version of nabe while talking about different ingredients and the source locations of these ingredients

This is a parallel activity from the New Horizons textbook where students are asked to make their own curry. For this one, students will need to think about the name and taste of their nabe after doing practice conversations on "Where is the (ingredient) from?"

  1. The teacher will show an exemplar presentation of a special nabe.
  2. Students will then be asked to make their own special nabe in groups using different cards that will be distributed to students.
  3. Each group must have only one ingredient from the following groups: A Vegetables B Mushrooms C Meat D Seafood E Special ingredients
  4. Students will be randomly given a card as their ingredient. (See the "Nabemono" slides and have them printed beforehand)
  5. Then, students will be asked to group themselves following the instruction (only one from each ingredient group!)

  6. In groups, students will introduce their ingredient by doing this conversation activity:
    Q: What do you have?
    A: I have ____.
    Q: Where is/are the _
    __ from?
    A: The ______ is/are from ________.

  7. Afterwards, students will think about the name of their nabe and its taste.

When we did this in class, we allotted another session for presentation of their nabes. The students then voted for their favorite nabe through a poll I made on Mentimeter! It was pretty fun for the kids and the group practice helped them prepare for their presentation. All other instructions are found in the attached presentation slides.
